Fortune cookie is one of the most popular desserts in Chinese restaurants in the United States. More than 3 billion are produced each year in the United States.
What is fortune cookie
Fortune cookie is a kind of crisp and sugary cookie. It is usually made of flour, sugar, vanilla and cream, and the cookie has a note similar to a proverb or prophecy. Sometimes it is also printed with “lucky numbers” (such as for Lottery, etc.), idioms, sayings, etc.
In the United States and Canada (also in other Western countries), fortune cookies are a dessert in Chinese restaurants, but not in China. Many immigrant communities in California say that fortune cookies were popular in the early 20th century, and their recipes were based on Japanese traditional pancakes.
